Announcement - NEW [14-May-2009]
The National Library of Medicine, Office of High Performance
Computing and Communications is seeking input regarding the
current status of the Insight Toolkit (ITK) as well as input on
future directions for this image-processing software library.
We are holding a meeting to perform a code review, an
informal audit of the state of ITK. We intend to
explore the elements of the library that are most in need
of revision, the current stability of the library including
a review of the policy for backward compatibility in ITK,
the need for extending support in ITK for high performance
computing environments, and the need for simplifying the
use of ITK for entry-level programmers. The goal is to
prioritize development efforts for ITK, focusing the
programming community on a shared plan. This meeting will
be held from 9AM, May 28, 2009, until Noon, May 29th, 2009,
in the HPCC Collaboratory, National Library of Medicine, NIH
Building 38A, Room B1N30E.
About the meeting [addendum - 15-May-2009]
The design for ITK began in its first design meeting in November of
1999. At that time, we set the targets for the data processing and
computing needs of the user community to be five years in the future,
for the middle of the then upcoming decade. As the first decade of
the new millenium nears it end, the internal architecture for ITK
is aging, having exceeded expectations beyond the design targets.
NLM is seeking input on the current state of ITK and help in
prioritizing goals for revising the software.
The ITK review is open to any and all users and developers of
ITK. We will not be discussing any specifics of new contract
requirements during the 1-1/2 day event, but rather the changes
required of ITK to support the needs of the growing user community
for the next ten years.
The meeting is completely open, and you are welcome to
participate if you wish. Input from across the broad spectrum of
the ITK user community will be considered.
